Meducore Standard2: the compact defibrillation and monitoring unit
About the development of a compact defibrillation and monitoring unit to be used in demanding emergency situations
The MEDUCORE Standard² is a compact defibrillation and monitoring unit to be used in demanding emergency situations. The device informatively monitors all important vital parameters and supports resuscitation if necessary. It’s the perfect project to show our expertise for the areas electrical stimulation and monitoring.
At the beginning of the project
In the development phase of such a complex device, there are normative requirements for the parameters to be displayed as well as for the graphs and for alarms. With this in mind, the challenge is to provide the user with all vital information during rescue operations. Of course, it’s important to make sure there is a user-friendly human-machine interface (HMI) and robust software that supports the user in an emergency and does not get in the way. The basis for successful cooperation was Corscience’s Quality Management system, which defines clear work packages for a project and makes the development process completely transparent.
In order to efficiently and purposefully integrate these requirements for a device during the product development stage, various workshops with the different WEINMANN EMT GmbH & Co. KG stakeholders were held at the beginning of the project. In addition to the product management team, Corscience also brought other stakeholders on board for this purpose, such as technical support management and the lifecycle team. By doing this, not only could hidden stakeholders be identified, but also some empirical data from existing systems, processes and customer opinions could be included in the requirements.
Systems engineering for defibrillators
During the course of product development, Corscience was already able to build on previous joint projects with Weinmann in order to better respond to customer-specific requirements and requests. Hardware and software developers, system architects and project managers from Corscience worked alongside their partners at Weinmann to create this medical device, with Corscience bearing the responsibility for the system.
When the unit was undergoing development, it was necessary to meet partially contradictory requirements and complex interactions between software, hardware and mechanics while taking regulatory boundary conditions into consideration. The current and voltage for a defibrillation pulse is 2,000 V in the 2-digit ampere range. Electrical impulses with these kinds of energies can greatly interfere with other parts of the electronics during charging and shock. These interferences can change the patient’s ECG signal, for example, but must not lead to a malfunction or misdiagnosis. Due to the variety of vital parameters to be measured and displayed, such as 12-pole diagnostic ECG, SpO2 or NiBP, these interactions occur again and again.
The customers’ benefit
In this way, Corscience was able to support Weimann with its expertise in systems engineering as well as with appropriate experts in hardware, software, mechanics and regulatory issues in the area of electrical stimulation and monitoring. Furthermore, it was possible to integrate Corscience OEM solutions for vital parameter diagnostics – the CAP201 and the ChipOx. To sum up, Corscience, in close cooperation with Weinmann, was able to create a robust and attractive device that has a great number of benefits for customers as well as medical experts in emergencies.
